EGN 1002: Introduction to Engineering

Fall 2009/ 1 Credit / C. Abernathy

This course introduces students to the departments that offer undergraduate engineering degrees at the University of Florida. The class breaks students into groups of 20 and rotates the groups weekly through each department. During department visits, students participate in hands-on experiments. The goal of the class is to help students make informed choices about career alternatives.

The goal of the class is to help students make an informed choice about career alternatives. Designed specifically to offer a better format for introducing potential engineering students to the opportunities within engineering, this course was developed as part of a research project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). After completing this course, students should better understand the impact of engineering solutions in a secular context and be familiar with some contemporary issues. There are no required texts or software for this class.

Grading & Attendance

The grade will be based on a combination of attendance and participation. Clearly, attendance is mandatory. You are allowed to miss one class (in addition to the days off). You cannot count multiple visits to the same discipline. There are NO excused absences! Each additional missed class (over one) drops your grade a partial letter grade (B+, B, C+, C, D+, D, E). In addition, the extent of your participation in the individual labs will be judged and can reduce your grade. The class is still only one credit.

Meeting Times & Location

Depending on which section you've registered for, class will meet on either Wednesdays or Thursdays from 8th to 10th period. Check your schedule to verify the section in which you are enrolled: Section numbers 7872, 7873, 7875, 7876, 7880 through 7886, 8704, 8707, and 8712 will meet on Wednesdays, and section numbers 7889, 7893, 7897, 7901 through 7904, 7908, 7918, and 9494 will meet on Thursdays.

We've chosen 12 of the college's labs to give you an overview of engineering. Each week your section will visit one of these labs. Since you'll be reporting straight to the lab (a different lab each week), you should check the scheduling grid before each class to make sure you end up in the right place.
